Colour Film: Manly, Lawson & Misc

I recently developed two rolls of film shot by my brand new Pentax SP1000. I have had issues with Fuji Superia 400 previously and on my last bulk film purchase, I decided to try Fuji Superia 200. Funnily enough, Superia 200 has now been discontinued! I enjoyed the 200 a lot more than the 400. The Pentax SP1000 is my first manual camera and I definitely need to be more aware of the aperture as some of my shots were severely underexposed. Well, at least that is where I think the problem lies. There were some shots that were so dreamy, and then others that were ... not.

This post will feature my first roll and contain shots from the Lawson Waterfall Circuit (blogged here), Manly Beach and random stuff!

BW Film: Sydney [Part 2]

Continuing on from Part 1! These photos were taken during a lunch break over a year ago in Sydney CBD.












I am heading out on another road trip to Central West of NSW and hopefully there are no mishaps! I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter long weekend!

BW Film: Sydney [Part 1]

I recently developed a few rolls of film and on one of my rolls, I discovered some shots from the Sydney region. It is only when I develop my black and white rolls that I remember how much I love black and white film photography. Part 2 will be coming soon!

BW Film: Turkey

I always have these bouts every now and then where I feel that I should be out there doing something. It really comes down to my wanderlust flaring up and I am just itching to travel and explore the world.  But alas, practically I can't be jetting off to other countries all the time. And of course, between saving as much money as I can for a deposit for property and travelling the world, something has to give.

Some travel photos from Turkey. An incredible country and one I want to return to ... one day. Too many places to see, too little time.

BW Film: Sydney

I got two rolls of black and white film developed by a camera store near work. This time, relatively cheap and no scratches! Although I've now come to realise that developing black and white film really is an art and the two professionals that have done it have resulted in two different kind of photos. This time, the shadows and the highlights in the photo are a lot more distinct. I also feel like the grain is more obvious. Compare with the previous roll.











Seeing these photos also makes me realise that I need to be more aware of the light and shadows in photos. Just another lesson on my very long learning curve.

BW Film: Sticky Shutter Problems Round Two

Hopefully this is the last roll with this sticky shutter problem as I still have two underdeveloped rolls from Europe. This was my first go at developing and it didn't go so well. Both my rolls were underdeveloped which is a little heartbreaking. But what is even more heartbreaking is that the shots I was most looking forward to had the most severe shutter problem. Seriously. That hurts. I have another camera that doesn't have this problem, but I have been feeling a little frustrated and disheartened with film which is why I have been shooting with digital again. So many things can go wrong which you don't know until you have it in your hands. The film might be crap. Check. The camera might have a problem. Check. The person developing it can be incompetent. Check. My lack of developing skills results in shit photos. Check. Check. Check.

As mentioned above, I underdeveloped my roll and I had to do a lot of Photoshop-ing on all the photos. The photos aren't sharp, the grain is out of this world and the details in the lighter areas are almost non existent. I can only improve I suppose. But those lost shots really bring me down.




The grain on that shirt is crazy.

Colour Film: Sticky Shutter Problems

It is Fri-yay! It has been a long and tough week. Work has been quite unfulfilling and on top of that, a stupid my fellow grad made an incredibly selfish decision which has directly impacted me. But he is full of bloody excuses and acts as though he has done no wrong. On top of all that, I went to develop a roll of film and I came out feeling very unimpressed. Firstly, rude staff. Secondly, I have a massive scratch in my negatives. Luckily for them, the roll was already subpar so nothing was really ruined, but I was fuming. I know they scratched it when they were removing the film from the canister. Incompetence.

This roll of film wasn't the best. I was so disappointed. Unbeknownst to me, I have a sticky shutter and this has resulted in each frame to be half exposed. I actually don't know how long my camera has had this problem as I haven't developed a film from this camera since I was in Germany late last year. I have since shot around 5 rolls after that. I am a little worried that those rolls (when I do get around to developing) will all have the same problem. I have basically a brand new roll of film in there which means that I can't inspect the shutter. I have mentally written off that roll too. I just hope it was a very very recent problem.

The sticky shutter isn't so noticeable in this shot. Maybe because it doesn't take up half the frame.

What is funny is that I used to use textures like that for my icons and banners back in my Photoshop graphics days.

In other film news, I have purchased 10 x Kodak Tri-X 400 and 5 x Fujifilm Superia Xtra 200! I am still not a fan of Superia Xtra 400, and hopefully I enjoy 200 a little more (it was the cheapest colour film available on the site).

Colour Film: A Roll from Three Years Ago

Film photography is usually quite similar to a time capsule. The period between when I take the photo and when I develop is usually quite a while. However, I have to say that this roll takes the cake. These photos are over three years old. I wrote about it here which is when I went to Thredbo back in July 2012. I am no longer friends or in contact with anyone that I went on that weekend trip with. This really was quite the trip down memory lane. I actually don't even remember taking my Olympus Trip with me.












I am so glad to be finished with uni!
